Museum of Illusions in Veliko Tarnovo: The World Is Not What It Seems

Hello, lovers of the unusual and seekers of new experiences! Today we invite you on a different kind of journey—not through time, but through reality itself. Welcome to one of the most unique and fun places in Veliko Tarnovo – the Museum of Illusions. This is not just a museum – it’s a world where your senses will be challenged and your logic tested. Reality is “bent” here, and each room is a meeting place for science, art, and imagination.

The Museum of Illusions: Fantasy and Science Interwoven in an Experience

Located in the heart of the old town of Veliko Tarnovo, the Museum of Illusions spans five floors and over 500 sq. meters of fun and sensory challenges. There are no limits here – everything is interactive, designed to be touched, explored, and experienced. With over 100 exhibits that will shake your perception of perspective, space, and reality, the museum will make you laugh, wonder, and take… lots of pictures!

What Will You See in the Museum?

  • Upside-Down Room: In this room, gravity is questionable – the floor is above your head, and the furniture seems to defy physics. Perfect for creative photos and fun ways to trick your eyes (and your camera).
  • Jedi Zone: Here, you’ll appear to be floating in mid-air – no Force or special effects needed. Just the right angle and readiness for a photo that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie.
  • Ames Room: This room will make you look like a giant or a dwarf – depending on where you stand. One of the most popular illusions in the museum, it demonstrates how easily the eye can be deceived.
  • Levitating Objects and Mirror Illusions: In places where something seems impossible – it just happens. You’ll see light bulbs that “glow on their own,” endless tunnels, and mirrors that seem to follow you.
  • 3D Paintings and Holograms: No frames, no limits – just you and the scene. One moment you’re on a flying carpet, the next you’re face-to-face with a roaring dinosaur or entering a deep waterfall. Thanks to three-dimensional images and holograms, you become part of the art itself.
  • Sand Art and Mini “Sound and Light” Show: One of the museum’s most impressive features is the sand model of the Tsarevets Fortress, crafted from Verona artificial sand by sculptor Damyan Bumbalov. This unique exhibit comes to life through a miniature version of the famous “Sound and Light” show, available to watch at any time of day. It creates the feeling that you’re viewing the real Tsarevets… from above.

Multilingual and Accessible

The museum is open to the world – all exhibits are presented in nine languages: Bulgarian, English, German, French, Spanish, Turkish, Greek, Romanian, and Russian. Please note that only the ground floor is accessible to people with disabilities or strollers.
